Celtics Lead Race for Injured Lillard

Damian Lillard, recently waived by the Milwaukee Bucks, is a leading free agent but is expected to miss most or all of the 2025–26 NBA season as he recovers from an Achilles injury. The Boston Celtics have emerged as frontrunners for his signature, in part due to Jayson Tatum's active recruiting and their shared rehab schedules. Boston could sign Lillard at a steep discount because Milwaukee still owes him over $100 million, making a deal financially viable despite salary cap constraints. Other teams, including the Lakers, Warriors, and Orlando Magic, have also shown interest, while a possible return to the Portland Trail Blazers has been floated if Lillard values happiness and legacy over immediate title contention. Lillard is reportedly in no hurry to make a decision and may even take the season off to focus on recovery and family. The Celtics hope his eventual return, alongside Tatum, could help restore their championship prospects.
