Norwegian Cyclist Dies in Tour of Austria Crash
Norwegian cyclist Andre Drege, 25, died following a crash during the Tour of Austria on July 6, 2024, after losing control of his bike on a descent of the Grossglockner mountain. The tragic incident led to the cancellation of the final stage of the race, which was replaced by a memorial ride in his honor, as requested by his family and team, Coop-Repsol. Drege was part of a leading group when the crash occurred, and despite immediate medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries. His death has drawn widespread condolences from the cycling community, including the International Cycling Union (UCI) and various professional teams. Drege had been having a successful season with several wins and was expected to move up to the World Tour level next year. This incident follows the death of another cyclist, Gino Mäder, in a similar crash during the Tour de Suisse in 2023.
