Commonwealth Fusion Systems Raises $863M to Advance Virginia Fusion Plant

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS), a leading private fusion energy company based in Massachusetts, has raised $863 million in a Series B2 funding round, bringing its total capital raised to nearly $3 billion since its founding in 2018. This latest round is the largest among deep tech and energy companies since CFS's $1.8 billion Series B round in 2021 and represents about one-third of the total capital invested in private fusion companies globally. The funds will be used to complete SPARC, CFS's fusion demonstration machine, and to advance development on its first ARC power plant in Virginia. The investment round attracted a diverse group of new and existing investors, including international participants and venture arms such as NVIDIA’s NVentures, highlighting the company’s expanding global footprint and leadership in commercializing fusion power. CEO Bob Mumgaard emphasized that this funding round reflects investor confidence in CFS’s technology and its potential to provide a reliable, clean, and nearly limitless energy source, marking the birth of a new global industry. The involvement of major industrial and financial backers underscores the growing momentum behind fusion energy as a transformative clean energy solution.
