Cathay Group Reports HK$3.7B H1 Profit, Orders 14 Boeing 777-9 Jets
Cathay Group reported a strong first half of 2025 with a HK$3.7 billion profit, consistent with the previous year, driven by growing passenger volumes, resilient cargo performance, and lower fuel costs. The group announced a significant fleet expansion, exercising purchase rights for 14 additional Boeing 777-9 aircraft, increasing its total commitment to 35 jets valued at approximately $8.1 billion, marking its first Boeing order since 2013. These next-generation 777-9s, expected starting in 2027, will feature advanced cabin products including a new First Class experience, and help replace older 777-300ERs while supporting Cathay's expansion on long-haul routes, including new services to the United States and Australia. Cathay is also upgrading its passenger experience with 100% inflight connectivity and entertainment across its fleet, alongside investments in lounge redesigns and digital innovation as part of a broader HK$100 billion commitment to elevate its global aviation hub status. The new 777-9 jets offer improved fuel efficiency and emissions reductions, aligning with sustainability goals and enabling Cathay to meet increasing global travel demand. Overall, the airline continues to expand its global network with new routes and frequency increases, aiming to strengthen its competitive position worldwide.
