Funicular Crash Kills 16 Injures 21 Lisbon, Two Canadians Missing
A streetcar derailment in Lisbon, Portugal, killed 16 people and injured 21 others, including nationals from multiple countries. Among the deceased were two Canadians, confirmed by Portuguese police and France's foreign ministry, which noted a dual French-Canadian citizen also died. Global Affairs Canada has reported two Canadians as missing and is working with local authorities, though it has not officially confirmed any Canadian deaths, while Portugal’s attorney general indicated a high likelihood the Canadians are among the dead. The accident involved a funicular streetcar that derailed and crashed into a building, with witnesses describing the streetcar as out of control during the evening rush hour. Portuguese President and Prime Minister visited the crash site, and a mass was held to honor the victims. The government’s Office for Air and Rail Accident Investigations is preparing a preliminary report on the cause of the crash, expected shortly after the incident.
