Pakistan, FAO Launch Comprehensive Food Safety Assessment

Pakistan is addressing significant food safety challenges, including malnutrition and foodborne diseases, particularly affecting children. Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal emphasized the critical importance of food safety for public health and economic growth during the Inception Workshop on Food Control System Assessment, organized in collaboration with the FAO. This initiative aims to assess Pakistan's food control system and develop a strategic plan to enhance food safety protocols and align them with global standards. Iqbal highlighted that improving food safety is essential for maximizing agricultural exports under the 'Uraan Pakistan' initiative. Concurrently, the U.S. faces its own food safety challenges, with millions affected by foodborne illnesses each year, prompting calls for a more cohesive federal food safety oversight system. Both countries illustrate the global emphasis on improving food safety to protect public health and support economic objectives.
