Evergy, TerraPower Plan Advanced Nuclear Project Kansas

News summary

TerraPower, Evergy Inc., and the Kansas Department of Commerce have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the deployment of TerraPower's advanced Natrium nuclear reactor technology and energy storage system within Evergy's service territory in Kansas. The collaboration will evaluate site-specific characteristics, community support, licensing feasibility through the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and existing infrastructure to select a suitable location. TerraPower's Natrium technology features a 345-megawatt sodium-cooled fast reactor paired with molten salt-based energy storage, capable of boosting output to 500 MW during peak demand while maintaining steady base output. Evergy's Chairman and CEO, David Campbell, highlighted that nuclear energy has long been part of their generation mix and that this initiative aligns with their all-of-the-above energy strategy to add reliable, non-carbon emitting advanced nuclear energy in Kansas. The project comes amid increasing demand for power driven by data centers and electrification, supported by recent executive orders from President Donald Trump to streamline nuclear regulatory processes. TerraPower recently secured $650 million in funding to advance its technology, which is being developed in partnership with GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy.
