Paris Pompidou Centre closes for five-year 460€ million renovation
The Centre Pompidou in Paris, renowned for its modern art collection and iconic architecture by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, will close on September 22, 2025, for a major five-year renovation costing approximately 460 million euros. The closure follows the progressive removal of artworks, including pieces by Francis Bacon, Frida Kahlo, and Marcel Duchamp, with the final exhibition by Wolfgang Tillmans available until the closure. Renovations will address asbestos removal, improved accessibility and safety, interior redesign, enhanced climate protection, and energy efficiency improvements aimed at reducing energy costs by 40%. The renovation is partly funded by the French state and international contributions, including a 50 million euro pledge from Saudi Arabia. During the closure, the Pompidou will continue to engage audiences through its "Constellation" program, dispersing its collection to other institutions globally, including upcoming satellite locations in Seoul and Brussels. The project also includes rethinking the museum's cultural spaces and visitor experience, with reopening targeted around 2030.
