Mesa Man Sentenced 15 Years for Arson Attempting Murder Over $300 Debt
Lyle Terence Samuel was sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted first-degree murder and arson for setting fire to a Mesa apartment in August 2024 over a $300 debt. Samuel doused the victim's apartment entrance with gasoline and ignited it, blocking the only exit and forcing the victim to escape by jumping through a window, resulting in severe burns and lacerations that required a month-long hospitalization and multiple surgeries. Authorities found evidence including lighter fluid, a gasoline receipt in Samuel's RV, and accelerants on his shoes. The fire endangered other residents, causing significant property damage and putting innocent families and children at risk. Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell emphasized the reckless nature of the crime and praised the fire and police departments for their quick response that prevented further injuries. As part of a plea deal, additional charges were dropped, and prosecutors highlighted the difficulty of arson cases while ensuring accountability for such dangerous acts.
