Supertramp Co-Founder Rick Davies Dies at 81 After Decade-Long Cancer Battle
Rick Davies, the co-founder, lead vocalist, and keyboardist of the British rock band Supertramp, died at age 81 after a decade-long battle with multiple myeloma, a cancer affecting plasma cells. Born in Swindon, England, in 1944, Davies was a driving creative force behind Supertramp's signature sound, contributing iconic songs such as "The Logical Song," "Goodbye Stranger," and "Give a Little Bit." The band reached global fame with their 1979 album 'Breakfast in America,' which won two Grammy Awards and sold over 30 million copies worldwide. Despite the departure of co-founder Roger Hodgson in 1983, Davies continued to lead Supertramp until their final album in 2002 and maintained a lasting legacy in rock music. Surviving band members and fans remember him for his soulful voice, distinctive piano and Wurlitzer playing, as well as his warmth, resilience, and devotion to his wife Sue. His music endures as a testament to his impact on rock history and continues to inspire new generations.
