Nvidia, Google Invest $863M in Nuclear Fusion Startup
Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS), a Massachusetts-based startup developing nuclear fusion technology as a clean energy source, has raised $863 million in its latest funding round, bringing its total capital raised to about $3 billion—approximately one-third of all private fusion industry investments globally. Major investors in this round include Nvidia, Google, Bill Gates, Stanley Druckenmiller, and a consortium of Japanese companies, highlighting broad support from technology and finance sectors. CFS aims to complete its SPARC demonstration reactor and accelerate construction of its commercial ARC power plant in Virginia, designed to generate 400 megawatts of electricity to meet soaring data center energy demands, with Google committing to purchase half of the plant’s output. The company’s CEO Bob Mumgaard emphasized nuclear fusion’s potential as a sustainable, abundant, and clean energy solution capable of addressing 21st-century energy challenges, especially as AI and data centers drive increased electricity consumption. This funding round is one of the largest in deep tech financing and reinforces CFS’s position as the most capitalized fusion company worldwide, advancing the goal of commercial fusion energy by the early 2030s. The involvement of Nvidia also signifies the growing intersection between AI-driven industries and the pursuit of stable, eco-friendly energy sources.
