Finland Launches Europe's First 50-Qubit Quantum Computer

The VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and IQM Quantum Computers have launched Europe's first 50-qubit superconducting quantum computer, now accessible to researchers and businesses through the VTT QX quantum computing service. This milestone follows a four-year development project backed by a €20.7 million investment from the Finnish government, aimed at advancing quantum computing technology. The new system is expected to facilitate applications in material science, artificial intelligence, and optimization problems, marking a significant leap in Finland's capabilities in the quantum field. Erja Turunen, EVP of VTT, emphasized the importance of this technology for Finnish society and encouraged companies to explore its potential benefits. As Finland strengthens its position in the global quantum race, IQM sees this development as a foundational step towards larger quantum systems.
