New York, California Allocate Over $175M to Support Planned Parenthood Amid Federal Funding Cuts

In response to the Trump administration's one-year ban on Medicaid funding for organizations that provide abortions, New York Governor Kathy Hochul and California Governor Gavin Newsom have pledged substantial state funding to backfill lost federal support for Planned Parenthood. Hochul announced New York would cover approximately $35 million in missing Medicaid funds, while Newsom committed over $140 million to sustain reproductive health services in California. These actions come as Planned Parenthood clinics face significant financial strain, with about one-third of all locations nationwide at risk of closure due to the funding cuts. The federal legislation, part of President Trump's policy bill, prohibits Medicaid payments to nonprofits receiving over $800,000 in federal funds that provide abortions, effectively forcing clinics to choose between abortion services and remaining operational. Both governors framed their investments as a defense of reproductive rights and essential healthcare access amid ongoing political efforts by Republicans to restrict such services. Other states, including Washington, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and others, have also vowed to fill the funding gaps to support Planned Parenthood amid these federal restrictions.
