Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has signed an executive order banning conversion therapy for minors, a practice widely discredited and linked to increased rates of suicide and depression. This action follows repeated legislative attempts to ban the practice that were thwarted in the Republican-controlled state legislature. The executive order prohibits the use of state or federal funds for conversion therapy and empowers the state’s board of licensure to discipline violators. Beshear emphasized that conversion therapy lacks scientific support and is contrary to Kentucky values. Activists, including Chris Hartman from the Fairness Campaign, praised the governor for protecting LGBTQ youth, declaring the order as a necessary step for their welfare. At least 23 states and the District of Columbia have enacted similar bans against this harmful practice.
