US Tourist Fatally Shot During Bad Bunny Residency in Puerto Rico

Kevin Mares, a 25-year-old tourist from New York, was fatally shot at a nightspot called 'Shelter for Mistreated Men' in La Perla, a seaside shantytown near Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. Mares, who was visiting Puerto Rico with three friends to attend Bad Bunny's concert residency, was an innocent bystander caught in a predawn argument that escalated into gunfire, injuring him and two local men. Despite improvements in safety following federal raids and cultural revitalization efforts, La Perla continues to face challenges with violence and crime. Mares was shot twice in the abdomen and side and later died at the hospital; the other victims remain hospitalized. The police are still investigating the shooting, with no arrests or description of the shooter yet available. Loved ones described Mares as a devoted son and friend who had been planning to propose to his longtime girlfriend, and a GoFundMe page was created to help cover the costs of bringing his body back home.
