Roman Garrison Site in England Reveals Rare Bedbug Discovery

In a rare discovery, Roman bedbugs were found at Vindolanda, which is a Roman garrison site in Northumberland, indicating the Romans brought the bedbugs to the UK. Katie Wyse Jackson, an archaeoentomology researcher, discovered two thoraces dating back to 100 AD, providing valuable insights into Roman hygiene, trade, and food storage. Dr. Stephen Davis, a UCD environmental archaeology lecturer, emphasized that these are the earliest bedbugs found in Britain so far and that they can provide further insights into trade, food storage, and hygiene.
