Italy, Algeria Strengthen Security, Trade, Migration Cooperation in Rome Summit
During an intergovernmental meeting in Rome, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune agreed to enhance cooperation in fighting terrorism and managing migration, including coordinating search and rescue operations for migrants crossing from North Africa to Europe. Both leaders emphasized strengthening bilateral relations across various sectors, reaffirming their commitment to a just political solution for the Sahrawi people's self-determination in line with international legitimacy. Business agreements were also signed, notably a $1.3 billion production sharing contract between Italian energy group Eni and Algerian oil and gas company Sonatrach to explore and develop hydrocarbons, alongside a subsea cable project between Sparkle (a Telecom Italia unit) and Algerie Telecom. Algeria remains Italy's leading trading partner in Africa, with trade valued at nearly 14 billion euros and Italian investments totaling 8.5 billion euros. The partnership reflects a strategic model built on deepening economic ties and shared security priorities, especially after Italy’s pivot from Russian energy dependence. Both leaders expressed confidence that the agreements would open broad horizons for future collaboration.
