Asda's sales have continued to decline, with the supermarket chain reporting a 2.2% drop in total revenue and a 5.3% decline in like-for-like sales for the second quarter of 2024. The company has lost market share, now holding 12.7% of the UK grocery market, down from 13.6% a year earlier, as competitors like Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons have gained customers. In response, Asda is investing £50 million to upgrade stores and an additional £30 million to increase staff levels to enhance customer experience and product availability. Despite these challenges, online sales have grown, with a 1.4% increase in online grocery and a 3.9% rise in George.com sales. Finance chief Michael Gleeson emphasized the importance of addressing customer perception and availability as the company navigates tougher year-on-year comparisons. Asda remains focused on its long-term growth strategy and price competitiveness to regain shopper loyalty.
