Oregon Hospital Faces $303M Malpractice Lawsuit

Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center in Medford, Oregon, is facing a $303 million lawsuit from 18 former patients and the families of deceased patients. The lawsuit alleges negligence after former nurse Dani Marie Schofield was accused of replacing fentanyl with non-sterile tap water in IV bags, leading to bacterial infections and multiple deaths. Schofield has been charged with 44 counts of second-degree assault but is not named as a defendant in this lawsuit. The plaintiffs claim the hospital failed to prevent drug diversion, adequately monitor employees, and ensure the safety of medication administration. The hospital began informing affected patients in December 2023. The suit seeks damages for medical expenses, lost income, and pain and suffering.
