Nell McCafferty, a trailblazing journalist and feminist activist, has died at the age of 80. Born in Derry in 1944, McCafferty co-founded the Irish Women’s Liberation Movement in 1970 and was renowned for her fearless advocacy on women's rights, poverty, and social justice. She was a pivotal figure in the 1971 Contraceptive Train protest and wrote extensively for various publications, including The Irish Times. Her notable works include 'A Woman to Blame' and 'The Armagh Women.' President Michael D. Higgins led tributes, calling her a pioneer with a unique gift for stirring public consciousness. Her funeral will be held in Derry, followed by a private cremation in Co Cavan.
