Charles Adler, Tracy Muggli Appointed Senators
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced the appointment of two new independent senators to the Canadian Senate: Charles Adler, a prominent radio host and journalist from Manitoba, and Tracy Muggli, a health care executive from Saskatchewan. Adler, a refugee from Hungary, has dedicated over 50 years to journalism and human rights advocacy, while Muggli brings over 35 years of experience in health and social services as the Executive Director of St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon. Their appointments, made by Gov. Gen. Mary Simon, were recommended by the Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments, which aims to create a merit-based and diverse Senate. Trudeau emphasized that their extensive backgrounds will strengthen the Senate's capacity to represent Canadian interests. Both senators have been recognized for their contributions, with Adler receiving the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. The new appointments increase the total number of independent senators to 84, reflecting a shift towards a more non-partisan Senate.
