Karla Sofia Gascón has made history as the first out trans performer nominated for a solo category at the 2025 Screen Actors Guild Awards for her role in 'Emilia Pérez'. The film, which also won four Golden Globe Awards including Best Picture: Musical or Comedy, portrays a Mexican cartel leader's journey through gender transition, featuring a notable performance by Zoe Saldaña as a lawyer. Gascón's acceptance speech at the Golden Globes emphasized resilience and identity, stating, "You can put us in jail, you can beat us up, but you can never take away our soul or existence or identity." 'Emilia Pérez' has received significant recognition this awards season, being nominated in multiple categories at the BAFTAs. Other LGBTQ+ actors have also been nominated for their performances, reflecting broader representation in the industry. The SAG Awards ceremony will take place on February 23, 2025.
