Gym Custodian Fatally Shot After Hygiene Dispute

A Daly City gym custodian, Rolando Viray Yanga, was fatally shot by a gym member, Maarij Afridi, after a dispute over hygiene protocols at the Fitness 19 gym. Afridi, known for disregarding gym rules, followed Yanga home and shot him multiple times outside his residence on September 29. Afridi has been charged with murder and a special circumstance of lying in wait, with potential life imprisonment without parole if convicted. Afridi's mother, Zaib Un Nisa Afridi, is also implicated as an accessory for driving the getaway vehicle. This incident marks Daly City's first homicide of 2024, and authorities used surveillance footage to identify and arrest the suspects. The community, led by Mayor Juslyn Manalo, has expressed its grief and condemnation of the violence.
