FAA Proposes Newark Flight Cap Extension Through 2026
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has proposed extending flight capacity limits at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) through October 2026, maintaining a cap of 72 flights per hour to address ongoing air traffic control staffing shortages and congestion issues. This extension allows for 36 arrivals and 36 departures per hour, slightly higher than the previous limit of 68 flights per hour, with reduced capacity during planned construction periods. United Airlines, the largest carrier at Newark with over two-thirds of the market share, supports the extension, highlighting improved reliability and on-time performance since the restrictions began. The FAA emphasized that without the extension, Newark risks returning to previous levels of delays and cancellations caused by staffing shortages and infrastructure constraints. Recent improvements include upgrades to communications networks and increased controller staffing, but the FAA views long-term solutions as necessary. The proposal is currently open for public comment, reflecting the regulator's cautious approach to balancing demand with operational capacity at this busy hub.
