Guangzhou FC Denied Professional License for 2025

Guangzhou FC, once a dominant force in Chinese football and eight-time champions of the Chinese Super League (CSL), will not compete professionally in the 2025 season due to financial difficulties. The Chinese Football Association (CFA) denied the club's application for league admission, citing insufficient funds to address their heavy historical debt. Guangzhou expressed regret over their inability to gain entry and thanked supporters for their understanding. The exclusion marks the end of an era characterized by significant spending, particularly after the club was acquired by property developer China Evergrande in 2010. Under Evergrande's ownership, Guangzhou achieved remarkable success, including two AFC Champions League titles and numerous domestic victories. However, financial troubles have led to a decline in performance and ultimately their relegation from the top tier of Chinese football.
