OpenAI plans transition of compute resources to SoftBank by 2030

OpenAI is anticipating a significant shift in its computing power sources over the next five years, moving from Microsoft to SoftBank. By 2030, the company expects that three-quarters of its data center capacity will come from SoftBank's Stargate project, a notable change from its current reliance on Microsoft. Although this transition is underway, OpenAI plans to continue increasing its investments in Microsoft-operated data centers in the interim. The financial implications are substantial, with OpenAI projecting to consume $20 billion in cash by 2027, a sharp rise from the $5 billion spent in 2024. Additionally, OpenAI forecasts that expenses related to running AI models will soon exceed its training costs. SoftBank is expected to provide approximately $30 billion in funding to support this transition.
