Hurricane Priscilla Intensifies Near Mexico Coast With Flood Risks
Hurricane Priscilla formed in the eastern Pacific Ocean south of Mexico and has rapidly intensified to a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds near 85 mph, with forecasts indicating it may reach Category 2 strength. The storm is moving slowly north-northwest, paralleling the southwestern coast of Mexico and Baja California Sur, remaining offshore but close enough to bring heavy rain, gusty winds, and dangerous surf conditions to coastal regions. Tropical storm watches are in effect for coastal areas from Punta San Telmo to Punta Mita, with rainfall totals potentially reaching 6 inches, raising concerns about flash flooding and landslides, especially in mountainous terrain. The Mexican government and meteorologists advise residents in low-lying or flood-prone areas to prepare evacuation plans and stay updated on weather advisories. While Priscilla is not expected to make landfall in the United States, its moisture could bring localized rainfall and flooding to parts of the southwestern U.S. later in the week. Additionally, another hurricane named Octave has formed off Mexico's coast but is not expected to impact land, with no watches or warnings issued for it.
