Red Sox Place Alex Bregman on IL, Promote Prospect Marcelo Mayer
The Boston Red Sox have placed third baseman Alex Bregman on the 10-day injured list due to a significant right quad strain, similar to an injury he suffered in 2021, which could sideline him until late July. Bregman injured his quad while running to first base in a game against Baltimore and underwent an MRI that confirmed the severity of the strain. To fill his roster spot, the Red Sox promoted top infield prospect Marcelo Mayer from Triple-A Worcester, who is set to make his major league debut. Mayer, a highly regarded prospect and former No. 4 overall draft pick, is expected to provide much-needed depth to Boston's infield, which has been affected by injuries to Bregman and first baseman Triston Casas, who was moved to the 60-day injured list after season-ending knee surgery. Manager Alex Cora ruled out Rafael Devers moving to third base in Bregman's absence but did not dismiss the possibility of Mayer taking on that role. The Red Sox hope Mayer's left-handed bat and versatility will help offset the loss of Bregman while he recovers.
