Greece Plans €25 Billion Defense Modernization Over 12 Years

Greece has announced a 25 billion euros ($26.99 billion) defense strategy, unveiled by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, aimed at modernizing its military capabilities over the next 12 years. The plan includes acquiring new submarines, drones, and a communication satellite, alongside the development of the 'Achilles Shield' anti-aircraft and anti-drone system to enhance national security. Mitsotakis emphasized the importance of investing in defense as a means to safeguard national sovereignty while maintaining fiscal prudence. Notably, he mandated that all future defense contracts must involve significant Greek industrial participation, fostering local manufacturing and workforce involvement. This initiative aligns with broader EU trends of increasing defense spending in response to regional tensions, particularly with Turkey. The modernization efforts also plan to include personnel reforms and advancements in cybersecurity within Greece's armed forces.
