DESI Study Sets Limit on Neutrino Masses
Recent studies using data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) have provided the most precise test of gravity over large cosmic scales, up to 11 billion years of history. The international DESI collaboration, consisting of over 900 scientists, confirmed that gravity behaves as predicted by Einstein's general relativity, supporting the standard model of the universe and restricting alternative theories regarding cosmic acceleration. This research also offers new insights into the mass of neutrinos, proposing an upper limit for these elusive particles, whose masses have yet to be precisely measured. The findings are significant as they validate general relativity on scales much larger than those of the solar system and help understand the role of dark energy in the universe's accelerating expansion. The DESI data also enhances previous work on the universe's structure, including baryon acoustic oscillations, further delineating the cosmic web of galaxies.
