Gene Hackman's Wife Dies from Hantavirus, Actor Passes Days Later

Betsy Arakawa, wife of actor Gene Hackman, died from Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, marking the first reported case in New Mexico this year. Arakawa is believed to have passed away on February 11, while Hackman, who suffered from advanced Alzheimer's, likely died around February 18. Their bodies were discovered on February 26 at their Santa Fe home, alongside their deceased dog. The New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator confirmed Arakawa's cause of death, while Hackman's death was attributed to heart disease, exacerbated by his Alzheimer's condition. Experts indicated that Hackman may not have been aware of his wife's death due to his illness. Hantavirus is primarily contracted through contact with infected rodents and can lead to severe respiratory issues.
