Chicago Fire Plans 22,000-Seat Stadium South Loop
The Chicago Fire soccer club has unveiled detailed renderings for a new, privately funded $650 million stadium to be located along the Chicago River in the South Loop's 'The 78' development. Designed by Gensler, the 22,000-seat stadium will feature an industrial, Chicago School architectural style with a red brick and steel facade, large glass panels, and a steel canopy covering much of the seating, while preserving open views of the skyline. Owner Joe Mansueto emphasized the stadium's timeless design aimed at adding to Chicago's iconic skyline and providing modern amenities including hospitality spaces and a dedicated bleacher section for superfans. Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2026, with the team planning to move in by 2028, and the development is part of a broader $8 billion mixed-use project by Related Midwest that also involves public discussions and city approval processes. Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Sun FC introduced concept renderings for a proposed 15,000-seat waterfront stadium at Ybor Harbor that would serve as the USL's headquarters and a multi-use venue for sports and events, though the project remains in early planning stages without a set start date or budget. Tampa officials highlighted the stadium's potential to promote women's sports and contribute to inclusive economic growth in the city.
