HII Develops High-Energy Laser Weapon System for U.S. Army
Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) has been awarded a contract to develop a High-Energy Laser (HEL) weapon system for the U.S. Army’s Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office (RCCTO). This system will focus on acquiring, tracking, and neutralizing Groups 1-3 Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) and is designed for both fixed-site defense and integration onto Army vehicles. The HEL prototype will adhere to a Modular Open Systems Approach, promoting interoperability and adaptability to meet evolving national security needs. HII's president, Grant Hagen, emphasized the importance of the system's affordability and effectiveness in enhancing force protection. Following successful field testing, the HEL system is expected to transition into low-rate initial production. This advancement highlights the increasing role of laser technology in modern military operations.
