2024 Ibrahim Index
The 2024 Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG) reveals that overall governance progress in Africa has stalled, with significant deterioration in security and democratic spaces since 2022. The report indicates that while 33 out of 54 countries have seen governance progress, nearly half of Africa's population lives in countries where governance has worsened compared to 2014. Notably, 13 countries, including Egypt and Seychelles, have shown improvements, with Seychelles now ranking as the top country. Conversely, 11 countries are experiencing ongoing governance decline, exacerbated by rising conflicts and insecurity. Despite improvements in infrastructure and gender equality, public perceptions of governance progress remain negative, particularly regarding economic opportunities and safety. Mo Ibrahim emphasizes that instability and poor governance are key drivers of conflict and insecurity across the continent.
