Community Rescues Pilot Whales in New Zealand
In a remarkable community effort, more than 30 pilot whales stranded on Ruakākā Beach in New Zealand were safely returned to the ocean after being lifted by sheets. Unfortunately, four of the whales did not survive the incident, as confirmed by New Zealand's conservation agency. The Department of Conservation highlighted the incredible response from hundreds of locals and specialists, with spokesperson Joel Lauterbach commending the compassion shown towards these marine animals. A cultural ceremony was held for the deceased whales, reflecting their significance as taonga, or sacred treasures, in Māori culture. New Zealand has a long history of whale strandings, with over 5,000 recorded since 1840, largely attributed to the country's unique coastal geography. Experts believe this geography can confuse pilot whales, who rely on echolocation for navigation.
