Plaque Unveils Normandy Gold Beach Honour Surrey D-Day Veterans
Commemorations for the D-Day landings continue across Normandy and beyond, honoring the sacrifices of World War II veterans and servicemen. In Arromanches, a blue plaque named "Surrey Square – the spiritual home of all Normandy Veterans" was unveiled to honor Surrey veterans who participated in the landings, accompanied by emotional family tributes and the installation of memorials alongside a new D-Day museum. At the former RAF Harwell base, a sculpture inspired by the wooden Horsa gliders was unveiled to commemorate the 6th Airborne Division and glider pilots, who played a vital role in securing Pegasus Bridge during the invasion. Additionally, a global knitting project, The Longest Yarn, produced a large tapestry recreating the Omaha Beach invasion scene, emphasizing the personal stories and sacrifices of those involved. Firebrand Flags, an American company founded by a Special Forces veteran, commemorated D-Day by parachuting 48-star American flags into Normandy and continues to offer these symbolic flags for sale as a tribute to WWII legacy. These efforts collectively reflect ongoing dedication to remembering D-Day’s pivotal role in Allied victory and honoring the bravery of those who participated.
