John Cowen Charged With Stabbing Thomas Carey

John Cowen, a former Countdown champion, has been charged with stabbing fellow contestant Thomas Carey at the Countdown in Blackpool 2024 event. Cowen, 30, is accused of wounding with intent and possession of a bladed article after allegedly attacking Carey with a knife on September 14, 2024. The incident took place at the Wainwright Club, where Carey, a Cambridge maths graduate and former Countdown champion, was taken to hospital with an arm injury. Cowen, known for scoring the third highest total in the 2017 Countdown series, was arrested at the scene and is being held in custody pending a court appearance. The annual Blackpool event is a competitive gathering of former Countdown winners. Cowen is due back in court on December 6, 2024.
