Plans for 124 Extra Care Apartments in South Shields

Plans have been submitted for a new Extra Care scheme in South Shields, featuring 124 one and two-bedroom apartments aimed at supporting residents with varying levels of care needs. Developed by Karbon Homes in collaboration with South Tyneside Council, the project will include 25 apartments specifically designed for individuals living with dementia. The development, located on the site of the former Chuter Ede school, is intended to address the shortage of affordable specialist accommodation in the area and promote independent living within the community. It will also feature modern amenities such as a community hub, bistro café, and public spaces. Cllr Tracey Dixon emphasized the importance of enabling residents to live independently rather than transitioning into residential care. This initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to enhance community health and well-being in South Tyneside.
