Multiple US HBCUs Enter Lockdown After Threats Amid FBI Investigation
Multiple historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) across the U.S. went into lockdown and canceled classes on September 11, 2025, after receiving reports of threats against their campuses, prompting investigations by local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. Institutions including Alabama State University, Hampton University, Virginia State University, Southern University and A&M College, Bethune-Cookman University, Clark Atlanta University, and Spelman College implemented shelter-in-place orders and heightened security measures, though no injuries were reported and authorities indicated the threats appeared to be hoaxes with no credible danger identified. The threats came amid heightened national concerns over domestic extremism and followed the recent shooting death of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk on a college campus, leading to increased vigilance and calls for swift investigations. Lawmakers and the Congressional Black Caucus condemned the threats as despicable acts of hateful extremism aimed at intimidating HBCUs, urging the Department of Justice and FBI to take decisive action. The lockdowns and school closures reflected an abundance of caution in an era marked by mass shootings and hoax calls, with some campuses remaining closed to the public for safety. Despite the distress caused, all affected campuses eventually lifted lockdowns and resumed normal operations while continuing to monitor security closely.
