Saul Bal, 41, has been indicted on first-degree murder and other felony charges for the fatal shooting of Phoenix police officer Zane Coolidge and the wounding of officer Matthew Haney; Bal was on parole at the time of the incident. The shooting occurred on September 3 when Bal allegedly opened fire while fleeing from officers responding to a car break-in. Coolidge died three days later, while Haney, protected by a ballistic vest, is recovering at home. Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell emphasized that Bal will be held accountable for his actions. Additional unrelated indictments include Marcuss Martinez, 39, in Hancock County for attempted murder, and Samuel Lopez-Ozuna, 18, in Tucson on federal charges related to a deadly crash while smuggling undocumented individuals.
