Weight-Loss Jabs Linked to 560 Pancreatitis Cases, 10 Deaths in UK
Health officials in the UK, led by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), have launched an urgent investigation into serious side effects linked to weight loss and diabetes medications known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, including popular drugs like Mounjaro, Wegovy, and Ozempic. Since these drugs' approval, more than 560 cases of pancreatitis, a potentially life-threatening inflammation of the pancreas, have been reported, with ten deaths suspected to be connected to their use. The MHRA is collaborating with Genomics England to study whether genetic factors increase the risk of adverse reactions, and they are encouraging patients who experience pancreatitis to report their cases through the Yellow Card scheme and participate in the Biobank study. Despite the risks, experts emphasize that for most users these medications are safe and effective for weight loss and diabetes management, though they stress the importance of medical supervision. The investigation comes amid growing use of these drugs, with approximately 1.5 million people in the UK currently using them, and government initiatives to expand their availability. Officials hope that genetic screening could one day help identify patients at higher risk, making treatment safer while addressing obesity and related health conditions.
