Police in the UK have reported a significant increase in the seizure of illegally modified e-bikes, with 937 confiscated in the year ending August 11, nearly double the 511 seized the previous year. These modifications often allow e-bikes to exceed the legal speed limit of 15.5 mph, with some capable of reaching speeds up to 70 mph. Conversion kits for such modifications are readily available online for as little as £300. The surge in confiscations reflects growing concerns about the danger these vehicles pose to both riders and pedestrians, as they often operate without the need to pedal, classifying them as electric mopeds or motorbikes. Authorities are focusing on confiscation rather than prosecution, with many illegal bikes being destroyed to ensure public safety. Calls for better enforcement of e-bike laws and increased awareness of safety issues are also rising as the popularity of these vehicles continues to grow.
