Jenji Kohan Criticizes Weeds Sequel Proposal

Jenji Kohan, the creator of the acclaimed series Weeds, has expressed strong disapproval of the proposed sequel being developed by Showtime, labeling it a 'money grab.' Speaking at the Seriesly Berlin TV conference, she questioned the relevance of the story in today's context, given the legalization of marijuana in many states, stating, 'I don’t really know if there’s more story to tell.' Kohan emphasized that the sequel would not be associated with the original creative team and believes there are more meaningful stories to explore. She also shared her frustration with the prevalence of dystopian narratives in television, advocating for a shift towards more positive storytelling, or 'protopia.' Despite her lack of involvement in the sequel, Kohan acknowledged that networks have the freedom to pursue the project.
