AI-Piloted Gripen Jet Tested in Baltic Combat Trials
Swedish aerospace firm Saab and German defense startup Helsing conducted successful tests of an AI-piloted Gripen E fighter jet in beyond-visual-range combat scenarios above the Baltic Sea in late May and early June 2025. The AI system, named 'Centaur,' competed against a human-operated Gripen D during three trial flights as part of Project Beyond, with funding from the Swedish government. Preparations included simulating 50 years of pilot experience for the AI in virtual environments. The test results were inconclusive regarding AI versus human pilot performance, but demonstrated rapid advancements in military AI and autonomy. The achievement marks a key milestone for European defense as it seeks to keep pace with US-led AI combat developments. The trials also prompt new questions about the evolving roles of human pilots as AI becomes more capable.
