Saints Start Rookie Tyler Shough at Quarterback

Rookie Tyler Shough will start at quarterback for the New Orleans Saints on Sunday at SoFi Stadium against the Los Angeles Rams, with Spencer Rattler moved to the bench. Shough, the Saints’ second-round pick (40th overall) out of Louisville and the highest-drafted Saints quarterback since Archie Manning, will make his first NFL start after relieving Rattler last week and completing 17 of 30 passes for 128 yards and an interception. Coach Kellen Moore made the change after reviewing an offense that ranks near the bottom of the league and citing Rattler’s recent turnover and protection problems — multiple interceptions, fumbles and seven sacks in recent quarters — and Rattler had been 1–7 as a starter this season. The move hands the offense to the rookie as the 1–7 Saints seek to jumpstart a struggling attack and give Shough an extended look as they try to stabilize the team.
