UNC Basketball GM Tanner Signs Five-Year $850K Contract

Jim Tanner, the North Carolina men's basketball general manager and executive director, has signed a five-year contract through 2030, with an annual base salary of $850,000 that increases to $950,000 after UNC made the NCAA Tournament and signed a five-star recruit. Tanner's contract includes performance incentives, such as a $100,000 raise for NCAA Tournament appearances or signing four- or five-star recruits, and additional bonuses for reaching postseason milestones like the Sweet Sixteen, Final Four, or winning the national championship. The agreement also allows Tanner and head coach Hubert Davis to negotiate budgets for staffing, including directors and assistants, to support the program at a high level. Tanner, a 1990 UNC graduate and former NBA agent and sports agency president, was hired to manage roster-building responsibilities, helping Davis focus more on coaching. The Tar Heels added nine newcomers for the 2025-26 season, including transfers and international players, and Tanner's role is tied to these recruiting and roster management efforts. His contract features a termination clause with a maximum two-year payout, ensuring financial security if UNC ends the agreement early.
