Emma Watson Calls Film Promotion 'Soul-Destroying'

Emma Watson, who hasn't acted on the big screen since wrapping Greta Gerwig's Little Women in 2018 (released 2019), told Hollywood Authentic she deeply misses the craft of acting — rehearsals, preparation and the 'intense form of meditation' of being on set — but finds promotion and 'selling' projects 'soul-destroying.' She said promotional duties were a major reason she stepped back and that the hiatus has left her 'maybe the happiest and healthiest' she's been. Since stepping away she has remained involved in film culture (attending Cannes to watch films), pursued other interests including pickleball, and performed in a small play with friends, which she still found stressful. Watson said she is open to behind-the-camera opportunities, is working on something new, and emphasized she is in no rush to return, prioritizing a grounded personal life and meaningful artistic involvement over publicity demands.
