Pope Francis visits East Timor

Pope Francis arrived in East Timor on Monday, receiving a warm welcome from enthusiastic crowds as he embarks on a three-day visit aimed at promoting recovery and development in the aftermath of the country's independence from Indonesia two decades ago. His arrival coincides with the 25th anniversary of the UN-backed referendum that led to East Timor's liberation, and he is expected to address the nation’s leaders and diplomats during his stay. Despite the celebratory atmosphere, the pope will also face the legacy of past abuse scandals within the church, particularly regarding Bishop Carlos Ximenes Belo, who has faced sanctions for sexual abuse. Local leaders expressed hope that Francis' visit would help consolidate national unity and peace. The visit marks a stark contrast to the last papal visit in 1989, during Indonesia's occupation, which resulted in the deaths of around 200,000 people. Francis' tour continues to Singapore and will conclude with a return to Rome.
