David Ortiz Defends Struggling Mets Star Juan Soto Amid High Expectations
Juan Soto, the New York Mets outfielder signed to a record-setting 15-year, $765 million contract, has faced high expectations that Hall of Famer David Ortiz says are unrealistic and unfair. Ortiz emphasized that Soto was never expected to perform like Barry Bonds, one of baseball's greatest hitters, but rather to consistently produce solid numbers such as 30 home runs, 90-100 RBIs, a batting average around .280-.290, and a strong on-base percentage. Despite Soto's slow start in the 2025 season, including a .202 batting average in May and recent offensive struggles, Ortiz remains confident in Soto's ability to deliver his typical performance by season's end. Ortiz also attributed some of the pressure on Soto to the perfect timing of his free agency, his agent, and the Mets' owner Steve Cohen's aggressive pursuit, which raised public expectations beyond Soto's established career profile. While fans have grown impatient, and Soto has even been booed at Citi Field, his manager Carlos Mendoza has seen some positive signs of adjustment. Ultimately, Ortiz calls for a tempered view of Soto's contributions, underscoring that while he is a great player, he is not the most complete or best in the league, nor should he be expected to be Barry Bonds.
