Buffalo Initiates Legal Process To Take Ownership Of Vacant Grand Hotel
The City of Buffalo, led by Mayor Chris Scanlon, has initiated legal proceedings under Article 19-B of the Real Property Actions and Proceedings Law to take ownership of the vacant and fire-damaged Buffalo Grand Hotel. The hotel, which has been closed since a 2022 fire caused over $50 million in damages, currently has 18 code violations and nearly $90,000 in unpaid taxes and sewer fees. City officials, including Commissioner Catherine Amdur, expressed no confidence in the current owner, Harry Stinson, who has failed to repair the property despite multiple promises and a recent insurance settlement. The expedited Article 19 process will give Stinson 30 days to address the violations, after which the city aims to gain clear title and transfer the property to a qualified developer to restore the 400-room hotel. Mayor Scanlon emphasized that the prolonged neglect of the hotel has negatively impacted downtown Buffalo’s growth, tourism, and the ability to host large conventions. The city’s goal is to revitalize the property and contribute to a safe, vibrant downtown Buffalo.
